Mistakes are Human - Seeing the Good is a Leaders :

Don’t Focus on People’s Weaknesses—Build on Their Strengths!

Introduction

The greatest responsibility of a Mentor is not merely to give knowledge, but to recognize the hidden potential in people and help them develop it. Adding value to your team means creating opportunities for people to learn, grow, and become better versions of themselves. A great Mentor does not constantly focus on a person’s weaknesses; instead, the Mentor recognizes their strengths, efforts, and possibilities. Remember: making mistakes is human nature, but seeing the good in people is the nature of a true Leader.

1. Learn to See Value in Every Person

A Mentor should be able to identify something special in every team member. Someone may be a good communicator, another may be hardworking, disciplined, eager to learn, or naturally helpful to others. We should never judge a person by a single mistake. We must look at the person’s overall character, potential, and willingness to improve. When a Mentor recognizes someone’s value, that person feels respected and important. This encourages them to bring out their abilities with greater confidence.

2. Appreciation Gives People the Power to Move Forward

Genuine appreciation can transform a person’s confidence. Simple words such as, “You did well,” “I can see your effort,” or “You have leadership potential” can create tremendous positive energy. Appreciation is not flattery. It is the sincere recognition of someone’s effort, improvement, or contribution. A Mentor who regularly appreciates people creates a positive environment where team members feel encouraged to participate, contribute, and develop themselves.

3. Focus on Improvement, Not on Weaknesses

Everyone makes mistakes. Making mistakes is human nature; learning from them is growth. If a Mentor repeatedly highlights someone’s weaknesses, the person may develop fear, low confidence, or frustration. Instead, the Mentor should help the person understand the lesson behind the mistake and guide them toward improvement. Rather than asking, “Who is responsible for the mistake?” ask, “What can we learn from it, and how can we improve?” Effective mentoring focuses on solutions, learning, and progress.

4. Seeing Good in People Is a Leader’s Nature

An ordinary person may look for weaknesses, but a true Leader looks for possibilities. Where others may say, “This person cannot do it,” a Mentor thinks, “What can this person achieve with the right guidance and support?” This mindset creates trust. When people know that their Leader believes in their abilities, they become more willing to accept responsibility, develop leadership skills, and step outside their comfort zone.

5. Make Edification a Team Culture

A Mentor should not only practice appreciation but also teach the entire team to appreciate one another. During meetings, recognize achievements, sincere efforts, discipline, learning, improvement, and leadership. Celebrate another person’s success as a collective team victory. When Edification becomes part of the team culture, relationships become stronger, trust increases, and unity grows. People stop pulling each other down and start lifting each other up. That is the foundation of a strong and growing team.

Conclusion

A true Mentor first tries to understand people before trying to change them. A great Leader may recognize weaknesses, but never defines a person by those weaknesses. Instead, the Leader searches for strengths, appreciates sincere efforts, and turns mistakes into learning opportunities. Remember: making mistakes is human nature, but seeing the good in people is the nature of a Leader. See the value in people, add value to their lives, and help them rise. Build people, and people will build the team.
